Parker Meadows is not in the starting lineup for Thursday’s game for the Tigers versus the Blue Jays.
Meadows will get a break with southpaw Eric Lauer on the mound for Toronto. Matt Vierling will get the start in center and hit fifth while Meadows rests.
Yankees OF prospect Spencer Jones hit three homers for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday.
The three homers came in his first three at-bats of the game. Jones has now hit 13 homers in his time with the RailRiders in just 19 games, and 29 homers in 68 games overall. The 6-foot-7 outfielder has enormous power, and the breakout season everyone has been ready for since he was drafted in the first-round back in 2022 appears to be happening. Jones is the subject of trade rumors, but the Yankees are going to need something very shiny in order to give up his services before the deadline.
Jesse Chavez announces his retirement from baseball.
Chavez retires at the age of 41 after completing 18 seasons while pitching for nine different teams. The right-hander finishes his career with an ERA of 4.27 over 1,142 innings of work with 51 wins and nine saves. He spent six of those seasons with Atlanta, and it only feels like more because he signed with the team more times than we can count.
Nick Ahmed announced his retirement from baseball.
Ahmed, 35, made the announcement on his social media accounts. He was considered one of the best defensive players in the sport, and he was a solid offensive option in the latter part of the previous decade for the Diamondbacks. He retires after accumulating 725 hits, 72 homers and 44 stolen bases over 12 seasons.
Justin Fields is considered “day-to-day” after dislocating a toe in his right foot on Thursday.
The team shared in a statement that “Fields avoided serious injury and significant missed time.” Fields reportedly did not suffer any type of fracture. Connective tissue concerns have not been addressed. Ultimately, this is a positive report for the dual-threat quarterback. He has just under 6.5 weeks to rehab the injury before the Jets take on the Steelers in Week 1. Pending a successful rehab program, Fields profiles as a high-upside QB1.
Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that the Diamondbacks are planning to operate as sellers at the trade deadline.
Rosenthal reports that the Diamondbacks haven’t decided just how far they’ll go in terms of trading players at the deadline. It’s beyond likely that pending free agents like Eugenio Suárez, Josh Naylor and Merrill Kelly are likely to be moved or at the very least shopped, but Rosenthal notes that the return for those players would need to clear the value of a potential compensation pick. Rosenthal also notes that Shelby Miller — who is currently on the injured list — is drawing interest, as is lefty keller Randal Grichuk. The Diamondbacks’ roster could look markedly different at this point next week.
