Tight end rankings are relatively simple because, of all the fantasy football positions, the tight end position has the fewest
elite players.
Tight ends spend much of their time blocking which means they get fewer touches than their WR counterparts. In addition, some teams routinely
have very little tight end production because of the nature of their offensive system.
In 2008, there was only one true fantasy stud at the tight end position: Tony Gonzalez. Gonzalez put up a total of 165 fantasy points, a healthy 46
points more than the 2nd ranked tight end Jason Witten. After Tony Gonzelez, there was only 45 points separating the next 12 tight ends. Jason Witten at 2nd
place put up 119 points while Kevin Boss in 13th place put up 74 points. 2008 was a bit of an anomaly as there are normally 3-4 stud tight ends who separate
themselves from the crowd.
Even though only one player finished 2008 in 'Tier 1', we still advice you to shoot for one of the big 4 in your fantasy football draft:
Tony Gonzalez, Jason Witten, Dallas Clark, or Antonio Gates. Any of these players has an equal chance to separate themselves from the pack and even if they don't
blow away the competition, they're guaranteed to be in the mix. Wait until the run on tight ends begins before you make your move, but if at all
possible try to land one of these proven playmakers.
