Whisenhunt's Endorsement Gives Beanie Wells a Ranking Boost

by pinch

Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt called Chris 'Beanie' Wells "clearly the guy" during practice yesterday.  With Tim Hightower recently traded to the Redskins, it has become clear that no one is threatening Wells' grip on the full-time starting role.

Beanie had an enormous 2009 rookie campaign piling up 7 TDs and nearly 1000 yards on the ground, but he regressed in 2010 rushing for only 397 yards and 2 TDs on his way to 4.5 fantasy points per game.  Now that he has the starting role all to himself, we could see Beanie returning to rookie form.  Having Kolb under center could open up the running lanes a bit as he's much more of a passing threat than Derek Anderson.

The only possible wrench in Beanie's quest for stud-ville is the addition of rookie running back Ryan Williams.  Williams was drafted by Arizona in the second round out of Virginia Tech.  Williams' style has been compared to his idol Walter Peyton, so if Beanie stumbles or fumbles away his opportunity, the youngster is more than ready to push for significant playing time.

It should also be noted that as a team the Cardinals rushed for league-low 1388 yards in 2010.  So, while being declared the unquestioned starter is a good thing, the ceiling is still quite low for a running back in the Arizona offense.  Still, Whisenhunt's endorsement is enough for us to push Beanie up significantly in our rankings.  We have moved him up to #35 in our running back rankings, behind Miami's Daniel Thomas and in front of New York's Brandon Jacobs.

The ranking of Beanie goes up even more now that Williams is done for the season.
