Since Reggie Bush entered the NFL in 2006, his star power (and production) has continued to decline. Reggie had an admirable rookie campaign in 2006, piling up 1307 all-purpose yards and 8 TDs. In 2009, he even played a pivotal role in helping the New Orleans Saints win their first-ever Superbowl. But the fact is that Reggie has never lived up to the hype that preceding him coming into the league and has never developed into a true starting NFL running back.
However, these facts have not deterred avid Bush supporters from coming up with every excuse under the sun to defend the man who tried in vain to revive and re-invent the juke move in the NFL. Over the years, some of the more popular excuses for Reggie's shortcomings include:
"Reggie was never given a chance to be THE guy." "Reggie works best in space" (as opposed to those ball carriers who work best with defenders hanging off of them) "Reggie needs more touches to get going."
"Reggie works best in space" (as opposed to those ball carriers who work best with defenders hanging off of them)
But the one argument that seems to live on even after Reggie's departure from New Orleans is that Reggie Bush is "a valuable decoy". This decoy theory postulates that Bush runs in one direction, the defense follows Reggie, then the guy who actually has the ball runs in the other direction (presumably into the endzone). Although based largely in science fiction, this theory has surprisingly gained significant ground as fantasy football hosts recently announced they'll integrate the 'decoy' position into their standard fantasy football configurations in 2011.
Fantasy hosts are still finalizing the details regarding the new position, but preliminary scoring discussions hint that the decoy position will be awarded points if any other player on the fantasy team scores points (only logical since the decoy was partially responsible for the score). Then there is the problem that to date Reggie Bush seems to be the only NFL player who qualifies for the new position. With only one player available to fill the new decoy position, experts are predicting this development could spur a new "Stud Decoy Theory" as owners scramble to fill the position.
Obviously it's a work in progress.
